Champions League Talk has received a rumor that DirecTV has acquired the TV rights to the debut season of the UEFA Europa League on US television.
The semi-finals of the 2009 Europa League, previously known as the UEFA Cup, as well as the quarter-finals and final will be shown on DirecTV. An inside source has revealed that both GolTV and Setanta Sports are working on picking up the TV rights for some of the games in the earlier rounds of the tournament.
During the 2008-2009 season, Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta Sports shared the TV rights to the tournament.
If DirecTV has acquired the TV rights to the UEFA Europa League, the games will presumably be available via pay-per-view on the satellite network.

I got an email from Setanta saying they would not seek the Europa League’s earlier rounds. Hope Gol TV comes through. If Fulham make the group stage, I’d like to be able to watch them on TV rather than a stream.
I doubt they’d be on PPV. DirecTV has a channel they show a bunch of random television on. Ch.101
If they put them on PPV nobody here would watch. It’ll be interesting to see where they show it (showing it on the 101 might be an option, as the guy above me said) but that’s sort of weird to see a cable provider buy the rights to a competition that gets far less airtime than the CL.
Not that unheard of. DirecTV have held U.S. rights to several Cricket competitions. They charge the fuck out of it too.
Such broad statements there. On the off chance Fulham were to advance that far, you can bet we’d be willing to watch it on PPV. Same could be said of Everton or Villa supporters here.
Putting the games on Channel 101 makes sense. They’ve just added a live simulcast of the Dan Patrick Show and they show the UFC weigh ins live.
Last year they showed the qualifying for the groups on Channel 5.
I should know I watched us (Everton) get knocked out by Standard Liege, although they are a Champions League team.
Cant Sky, ESPN or Channel 5 show it, we should not have to pay to watch it.
