The first legs of the quarter-finals saw 3 of 4 matches end with large advantages being established. The fixture that all the attention will be focused on this week will be the second leg match between Manchester United FC and Chelsea FC.

United played a perfect road game and took an important away goal and a 1-0 aggregate lead back to Old Trafford. United are unbeaten at home in all competitions this season but Chelsea won on their last trip to Old Trafford 12 months ago. Chelsea need at least a 2-0 or 2-1 victory to advance. A 1-0 result for Chelsea after 90 minutes would take the game to extra time.

Chelsea are seeking a sixth UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance in eight seasons while United are bidding for a fourth in five years. Chelsea’s domestic league hopes are all but gone so I would expect them to throw everything they have into Tuesday’s game.

Depsite all the talk of how daunting it can be for away clubs to play at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, FC Barcelona are sitting on a massive 4 goal advantage. In order to advance, Shakhtar must do what only three clubs have previously managed in UEFA competition – overturn a four-goal first-leg deficit.

Real Madrid CF recovered a 5-1 loss at VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup third round, winning the return 4-0. Leixões SC lost 6-2 at FC La Chaux-de-Fonds in the 1961/62 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup preliminary round but took the tie with a 5-0 triumph in Portugal. FK Partizan also lost 6-2 at Queens Park Rangers FC in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup second round first leg, but prevailed on away goals with a 4-0 victory in Belgrade.

Defending champions Internazionale FC have an even higher mountain to scale. They were defeated 5-2 at the San Siro by FC Schalke 04. No side has ever recovered from such a big home deficit to win a UEFA Champions League tie.

Tottenham Hotspur FC are heading home to White Hart Lane down 4 goals to Real Madrid CF and do not have the comfort of an away goal to ease their burden. It looks to be a monumental ask for their first adventure into the Champions League to continue. Two rash and unnecessary tackles by Tottenham forward Peter Crouch were the turning point of the match. Crouch gave the referee little option in either case but to show him a yellow card. The second tackle resulted in the red card being shown with only 15 minutes gone on the clock. Tottenham’s hope of an away result were gone just as quickly.

Real Madrid CF are primed to reach a first UEFA Champions League semi-final for eight years. That Madrid squad, which included the likes of Ronaldo, Raul and Zinedine Zidane, lost in the 2002-03 semi-finals to runners-up Juventus.

Spurs have to go a long way back in their history — almost 40 years to find inspiration to overturn the deficit they face. Down by a 4-2 margin to Polish side Górnik Zabrze, Tottenham were imperious at home producing an 8-1 victory. That was under the guidance of Tottenham legend Bill Nicholson who served the club in every capacity from boot room apprentice to club president.

Some great match-ups including a repeat of last season’s final with Inter Milan facing Bayern Munich. The match-up that will likely garner more press is the Arsenal v Barcelona. The two clubs play similar styles though Barcelona is still the better side for my money. It’s not impossible to think Arsenal could pull an upset but I remain unconvinced of their back 4 and they do not have an undisputed number 1 goalkeeper. Still, this should be a fun tie to watch. Thank you UEFA !

We’ll have more thorough analysis of these match-ups once the January transfer window has closed.

Champions League Round of 16 draw in full:
Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk
AC Milan v Tottenham
Valencia v Schalke
Inter Milan v Bayern Munich
Lyon v Real Madrid
Arsenal v Barcelona
Marseille v Manchester United
FC Copenhagen v Chelsea

First-leg matches will be played on February 15, 16, 22 or 23. Return legs will be played on March 8, 9, 15 or 16.

The Champions League group stages have finished, and now it’s time to see which teams will face each other in the round of 16 which is coming up next. UEFA will be drawing the match-ups for the Champions League and the Europa League on December 17th, and there’s a set of guidelines which the round of 16 matches will have to comply with. Here’s the guidelines below:

Winners and runner-ups of the groups will be drawn against each other.

The runner-up team will play the first leg at home.

No two teams from the same association can be drawn against each other, ex. Manchester United – Arsenal cannot be drawn because both sides are from the Premier League.

No two teams from the same group can be drawn against each other, ex. Tottenham – Inter Milan cannot be drawn because they were in the same group.

With these guidelines, I’ve put together the matches that I want to see in the round of 16. I tried to think about match-ups which will be exciting, even, and hopefully full of goals. Here they are below:

Tottenham Hotspur – Valencia

Schalke 04 – FC Copenhagen

Manchester United – Marseille

Barcelona – Roma

Bayern Munich – Inter Milan

Chelsea – AC Milan

Real Madrid – Arsenal

Shakhtar Donetsk – Lyon

What do you think about my choices? I decided to put Bayern Munich against Inter Milan, because I think it would be exciting to see Bayern take revenge for last season’s final which they lost. I also decided to put Arsenal against Real Madrid because Arsene Wenger’s side tries to replicate Barcelona’s beautiful passing and attacking style, could they do it against Real Madrid? Tottenham against Valencia seems like an extremely exciting match-up to me, because both sides love to play an attacking and free-flowing style, and I don’t think I can predict a winner between those two. And I put Chelsea against AC Milan because of Carlo Ancelotti facing his former side, along with the possibility of seeing an Ibrahimovic-led AC Milan side try and break down Chelsea.

Make sure to share your thoughts on what match-ups you want to see in the round of 16 by commenting below! What could be the most exciting match in the next round? Comment below!

Tonight’s game promised to give one of the closest indications so far of who could become European champions this year, but in truth, nobody could’ve predicted what followed. Barcelona dissected their rivals with precise, incisive play that arguably would have torn absolutely any team in the world apart. In doing so, they confirmed their status as clear favourites for the Champions League once again, and it’d take a brave man to doubt them. With 13 goals in their last 2 league games, they are beginning to look even more menacing than they ever did in their historic 2008/09 season, and their form will be striking fear into managers across the continent.

Regardless of tonight’s result, however, it would still be naïve to completely write off Real Madrid at this stage. They will have learnt a great deal from tonight’s events, and in particular, Mourinho will now have a far better understanding of his team’s strengths and weaknesses, and possibly even his own managerial weaknesses. The biggest concern has to be the fact that he abandoned his usual “park the bus” (for want of a less horribly clichéd term) tactics for these key matches in favour of a slightly more ambitious counter attacking system, and saw his team get dismantled with relative ease. Real were exposed down both flanks, and coupled with a high defensive line, Barca always threatened to get in behind and cut the ball across goal to create more chances. Will this cause Mourinho to abandon these more ambitious tactics in future big games despite the pressure from those above him? Only time will tell, but it may be Real’s only chance of success, considering their weakness in the core areas compared to the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea.

Outside of Spain, it appears that the usual recent suspects will be challenging – almost by default. In England, Manchester United remain unbeaten and are now finally hitting their stride, having predictably struggled to find any real form in the first third of the season. Their defence looks imperious once again, Nani is in the form of his life, and with Rooney dropping deep to play behind Berbatov, the two forwards finally look capable of reaching their potential as a partnership. Chelsea have begun to stutter of late, and this has highlighted the challenge they face. When fully fit, their squad is intimidating to even look at, but remove two or three key players and suddenly they become a beatable side. For this reason, it will be absolutely essential for them to keep Lampard, Drogba, Essien, Malouda and Terry fit if they’re to have a realistic chance of toppling Europe’s elite sides for the first time. They may well struggle to keep up with the congested fixture list in the closing period of the season unless they make a couple of signings in January – David Luiz of Benfica is one player currently heavily linked with the club. Arsenal, meanwhile, appear to be suffering from the same problems that seem to plague them every year. They remain uncertain at the back and display a real lack of character whenever they have found themselves under heavy pressure, so although the quarter finals will be a minimum expectation, this will most likely be the furthest they go unless they avoid the top sides – particularly Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona.

Both of last year’s finalists; Inter and Bayern, have looked extremely underwhelming so far this season. Without the injured Arjen Robben, Bayern have looked painfully mediocre for long periods, but they still look set to top Group E, ahead of Roma. If the draw is favourable to them, they might just have a chance of reaching the semi finals, but their reliance on Robben will once again be huge. One sign for encouragement, though, is the sudden improvement of Mario Gomez. The big-money signing from Stuttgart struggled to impress in his first season at the Allianz Arena, but he has now scored 16 goals in 20 appearances this season. Inter, however, will now almost certainly finish second in Group A behind Tottenham Hotspur and this will most likely mean they have to face one of the favourites for the competition in the next round. Unless they are lucky enough to be drawn with Shakhtar or Schalke, the writing may well be on the wall for them unless they make drastic changes in the January transfer window. The squad is finally beginning to show its age, and Rafael Benitez is already under huge pressure, following a multitude of disappointing results and unacceptable performances so far this season.

I would love to be able to predict great success for Shakhtar Donetsk or Copenhagen, but truthfully speaking, it will be a colossal surprise if any team other than those already mentioned features in the Wembley final. If I had to predict an outsider to cause a few shocks, it would be Tottenham. They are absolutely desperate for a top class midfield enforcer to replace the wasteful and clumsy Wilson Palacios, and they still lack the world-renowned goalscorer they searched so hard for in the summer, but Rafael Van Der Vaart, Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon have already proven they can expose just about any defence around. They have beaten Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Inter in the last 6 months or so, but under the extreme pressure of a Champions League knockout match, it would be no great surprise to see them crumble.

After failing to reach the finish line last season, Barcelona will be determined to re-claim the Champions League trophy and it’s looking increasingly likely that they will do so this year. The only hope for the rest of Europe is that Manchester United or Chelsea face them as early as possible and somehow nullify them in order to grind out a positive result over two legs. If they reach the final, there is simply no way they will be stopped in a one-off match if they reach the levels they are capable of finding.

With just one more set of group stage matches to go, many teams have mathematically qualified for the knockout stages, but few did it better than Barcelona. Although Valencia destroyed Bursaspor 6-1, Barcelona played their usual brand of spectacular football, and they crushed Panathinaikos 3-0.Right now the teams which have mathematically qualified for the knockout stages are:

Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Schalke 04, Manchester United, Valencia, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.

Among the qualified teams you have some surprises, the newcomers Tottenham Hotspur fought well for their spot defeating the German side Werder Bremen 3-0 at home. Aaron Lennon was devastating on the right wing as he provided two assists with phenomenal runs. Eunice Kaboul netted the first with a great volley, Modric scored the second after Crouch headed it down into the Croatian’s path to control and volley, and then the big Englishman Crouch got a goal as well, tapping in from close range after Lennon had nutmegged a defender before passing it to him.

Inter Milan also qualified with their 1-0 win over Twente, and although the Italian side has been going through difficult times with a big injury list, Rafa Benitez’s side played excellently. Although the nerazzurri hit the woodwork a couple of times, the lone goal was scored by Cambiasso who reacted first to get on the end of a deflection off of Sneijder’s free kick. But Twente were dangerous as well, they clipped the crossbar late in the second half after a well worked chance, but the nerazzurri had already won. If you’re interested in a full breakdown of how Italian teams are doing in the Champions League, click here.

Manchester United also won, Sir Alex Ferguson’s team defeated Rangers 1-0 at Ibrox Stadium with a late penalty scored by Wayne Rooney. Rangers had played well throughout the match, and although the red devils had some good chances during the match, they never capitalized. But the win arrived with Wayne Rooney scoring the late penalty and celebrating with plenty of intensity.

The draw for the quarter-final matches was held Friday morning at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. As expected there are some big talking points, not the least being Thierry Henry’s return to face Arsenal. These clubs last faced off in the 2005-06 final when Henry was captain of Arsenal. Another matchup with a rich history is the Manchester United and Bayern Munich tie, which is a repeat of the 1999 final that United famously won with two late goals.

From one perspective, I found it a little disappointing that the two French clubs were drawn against each other but it will still be a banner night for French football. Ligue 1 is guaranteed to have a representative in the semi-finals.

The most intriguing matchup of the round could be Inter Milan v CSKA Moscow. The surprise result of the Round of 16 saw the Russian club dump out Spanish side Sevilla FC on the strength of 2 goals from Tomáš Necid and Keisuke Honda and a terrific, disciplined performance in Spain. Inter surprised many by defeating Chelsea on their home ground to advance to the quarter-finals and manager Jose Mourinho will be looking to replicate his 2004 success by bringing glory to Inter. Below are the full pairings with my picks to advance in bold.

Quarter-Final matches (1st leg – March20/31, 2nd leg – April 6/7)
Olympique Lyonnais v FC Girondins de Bordeaux
FC Bayern München v Manchester United FC
(The winners of these two ties will face off in semi-final 1)

Arsenal FC v FC Barcelona
FC Internazionale Milano v PFC CSKA Moskva
(The winners of these two ties will face off in semi-final 2)

The semi-finals will take place on April 20/21 & April 27/28.

The congestion of international, domestic and cup competitions is beginning to show as the injury lists grow longer. Several top stars will be missing from the Matchday 5 stage. Let’s take a look at how this might impact the results and standings.

Eric Abidal – D – Barcelona
The 30-year-old suffered a thigh injury on international duty with France and will miss games against Athletic Club Bilbao at the weekend, Internazionale on Tuesday, and their massive derby with Real Madrid five days later. Barça are third in Group F, a point behind leaders Internazionale and trail second-placed FC Rubin Kazan on head-to-head record, meaning their title defence would end abruptly if they lost to Inter and the Russian team beat FC Dynamo Kyiv in Kazan on Matchday 5.

Robin Van Persie – F – Arsenal
Van Persie’s story has taken a turn into what at first read seems like a subplot from a science fiction or urban fantasy novel. After rupturing ankle ligaments while on international duty for Netherlands, van Persie is reportedly travelling to Belgrade to seek treatment using a horse’s placenta. While sounding bizarre there is scientific evidence that the placenta is rich in proteins and iron as well as a host of other vital nutrients. This might explain why many animals eat the placenta after giving birth, a practice called placentophagia. Van Persie will miss about six weeks and will not take part in Arsenal’s remaining Group H fixtures against Royal Standard de Liège and Olympiacos FC, although the Gunners now require just a point to book their place in the last 16. Complicating team selection for Arsene Wenger is the fact that forward Nicklas Bendtner, a potential replacement for Van Persie, had a groin operation in Germany last Tuesday and is expected to be out for three to four weeks.

Frank Lampard – M – Chelsea
Lampard will miss Chelsea FC’s trip to FC Porto on November 25 after being ruled out for three weeks with a torn thigh muscle. Chelsea have already secured a first knockout round berth but victory in Porto would clinch first place in Group D. Lampard is also set to miss the Premier League leaders’ fixtures against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC on Saturday week and a massive away game to Arsenal FC on Nov 29th. Chelsea have a deep midfield and should be able to adjust for Lampard’s loss but the real news will be Chelsea demanding compensation from the English FA.

Reports of Lampard’s injury came after a cramped seven-hour plane journey. Many of the English players were reported to have complained of cramps and muscle pain after being forced to take a long-haul flight on a charter plane designed for short-haul only. Reports in the press claim that Chelsea will look to recoup Lampard’s £151,000-a-week wages in compensation from the FA.

Fernando Torres – F – Liverpool
Torres has been plagued with a persistent groin injury, which he has aggravated in recent weeks and he is still struggling with his fitness. Liverpool’s top scorer has been receiving round the clock treatment in a bid to get fit as soon as possible. However, this weekend’s game with Manchester City has come too soon for Torres with Liverpool hoping he will return in time for the Merseyside derby with Everton later this month. He remains doubtful for Liverpool’s must-win game against Debreceni VSC on November 24th. Compounding Liverpool’s problems, Israeli international Yossi Benayoun, 29, and 27-year-old Spain winger Riera have both sustained torn hamstrings. The initial prognosis was that they would be sitting out the trip to Debrecen and would struggle to be fit in time for the ACF Fiorentina home game on December 9th. However, both have also visited the same Serbian physiotherapist that Van Persie will visit. Mariana Kovacevic has been credited with accelerating recovery from injury with the use of placenta cells.

No matter what lineup they are able to field, Liverpool must win both reamaining games in order to have a chance of making the knockout round. They currently trail second-place Fiorentina by 5 points.

The controversy surrounding Manchester United’s signing of 16-year-old French prospect Paul Pogba has been cleared up. FIFA have ruled that Manchester United did not contravene any FIFA regulations in their recruitment of the young midfielder – specifically Article 19, which focuses on the protection of minors. United had been accused by French club Le Havre (HAC) of offering financial incentives to Pogba and his family to break a verbal agreement to stay at HAC until 2011. The accusation was launched in August but Le Havre pushed forth a formal complaint in September, hot on the heels of Chelsea’s transfer ban for inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens in 2007.

A statement released on manutd.com said: “Manchester United is pleased to confirm that the Football Association has been authorised by Fifa to register Paul Pogba as a Manchester United player with immediate effect.”

Reaction to the decision by the world press is mixed. Le Figaro, a leading French newspaper, writes that United exploited loopholes and repeats rumours that inducements of cash and a home for Pogba’s family were used to lure him to England. Le Havre have an outstanding reputation in developing young players, nurturing players like Real Madrid’s Lassana Diarra and Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia as well as Atletico Madrid’s Florent Sinama-Pongolle, who moved from the French club to Liverpool, before going to Spain.

This was not the first time United had their recruitment policies called into question. Italian club Lazio were unhappy over United’s pursuit and signing of Federico Macheda, who was 16 when he moved to Old Trafford in 2007. There are many who believe that academy players should be protected from the advances of overseas clubs until they are 18. Others will say that players who join big clubs receive a footballing education superior to the one they would get at a smaller club.

Le Havre have the right to appeal FIFA’s decision so we might not have heard the last of this case.

The UEFA Champions League is only in the group stage but realistically there are only a handful of teams who have a chance to win. So, who are the favorites to win and how are they looking so far? Here’s a look at the favorites to win the Champions League trophy in May and their current form.

FC Barcelona (1)

They’ve looked strong in La Liga and appear ready to make another deep run in this season’s Champions League. Lionel Messi continues to be one of the greatest players in the world and newly signed striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has adapted quickly to the club. Until they are knocked off, they will remain the favorites to repeat.

Chelsea (2)

Right now Chelsea are in great form and could challenge Barcelona for the trophy in May. The transfer window ban could hurt if they have any significant injuries but (fingers crossed) they are firing on all cylinders.

Real Madrid (3)

They spent a ton of money in the offseason and not winning at least one trophy would make this season a disappoint for RM. Ronaldo thrives in the Champions League but won’t have to carry the club with Kaka, Alonso, and Benzema on the roster. They had one slip up in the La Liga but are looking stronger than Man U but just behind Chelsea and Barcelona. They still have to prove that they are for real.

Manchester United (4)

Man U have not impressed so far in the season and will miss Cristiano Ronaldo. They do not appear to have the players to beat Barcelona but could make a signing in the winter transfer window. Sir Alex Ferguson will be able to get United into the knockout stage but right now they would struggle to make the final.

Arsenal (5)

Could this be the year that Arsenal sneaks into the final or actually wins? Well, its possible but not likely. A trip into the quarters or semis is within reach but they will have trouble getting past one of the other favorites. Also, relying on a team youth is prone to inconsist performances, especially on the road.

Liverpool (6)

The team seems a bit lost after losing Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. Fernando Torres is one of the top strikers but overall the club has disappointed in the past few season. Steven Gerrard and Torres will have to carry this team if they want to knock off Barcelona or Chelsea.

Inter Milan (7)

Will Jose Mourinho’s team be able to have Champions League success? They have shown their ability to dominated in the Serie A but have struggled in the Champions League. A draw in their first two group stage matches is not a good start but they should be able to make the knockout stage. Don’t underestimate Mourinho’s ability as a manager as they could easily make the quarters or semis.
